In a game with significant offensive production from both teams, it was
Victoria Moreland and Lexi Carpenter who led Pitt-Johnstown and Slippery Rock University respectively in efforts to earn a PSAC West Division triumph.
In the end though, it was Moreland's career-high 33 points and
Jamie Tabon's career-highs of 26 points and 17 rebounds that helped propel the Lady Cats to an 88-84 win over the Rock Wednesday night at the Morrow Fieldhouse in Slippery Rock.
Pitt-Johnstown improved to 7-11 overall and 3-9 in PSAC play with the win.
The game started fairly even as the score was tied four times in the game's first eight minutes. Pitt-Johnstown had the initial momentum, gaining and regaining the lead on three separate scores that broke ties in the game's opening minutes.
Moreland produced five points to open the game, three of which came a three-point field goal at 7:16 in the period on an assist from
Laurel O'Barto to give the Lady Cats a 7-4 advantage early on. O'Barto had a team-high 10 assists.
Slippery Rock responded with a jumper and a pair of free throws from Carpenter and a jumper from C.C. Dixon the give the Rock a 10-7 lead at 3:58. Carpenter scored a team-high 32 points and recorded a double-double with a game-high 11 assists for Slippery Rock, who falls to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in conference action with the loss.

UPJ was able to tie the game back at 12 points with another three-pointer from Moreland with 1:47 to go in the period, but Slippery Rock closed the quarter with a nine-point run, in which Carpenter, Dixon and Cassidy Wright all chipped in.
Not only did Moreland lead the game in points, but she also was the leader in three-point field goals, shooting 7-for-16 from the perimeter. Slippery Rock's run was not completed until the next period when Morgan Henderson made a layup on an assist from Carpenter to help the Rock go up 23-12, 24 seconds into the second quarter.
The Lady Cats were able to slowly trim away at the Rock's lead, and in the process of doing so, tallied 30 second-quarter points en route heading into halftime with the score tied at 42. Slippery Rock opened the second half with a 9-2 run within the first two minutes. Mallory Heinle capped off the run with a layup at 8:11 to give the Rock the edge, 51-44.
They ultimately constructed a 10-point lead, 61-51, after a three-pointer from Wright with 4:37 left in the period, but with the Lady Cats down 64-53 when Carpenter drained a jumper at the 3:04 third-quarter mark, Moreland answered with a jumper of her own.
The basket ignited her teammates to embark on a 13-point run, which was capped off with yet another three-point field goal from Moreland with 55 seconds remaining until the final period, propelling the Lady Cats to a 66-64 lead.
Slippery Rock recaptured the lead however, after a pair of free throws from Brooke Hinderliter and jumper from LeeAnn Gibson as the Rock headed into the fourth quarter with a 68-66 advantage.
Pitt-Johnstown tied the game twice more, at 68 and 70 points, before Moreland made both a layup and a shot from behind the arc by the 7:54 mark to set up the Lady Cats with a five-point advantage, which was kept for most of the final quarter.
That was until Carpenter scored her 30
th points in the game with a three-pointer at 2:49 as her team was down 79-77 with three minutes remaining, returning a one-point edge to the Rock.
The lead changed three more times in the next minute, but remained in UPJ's control the rest of the game after a layup with 1:32 left to play from
Jamie Tabon gave the Lady Cats an 83-82 advantage, setting up the team's third victory in conference play.
The Lady Cats are to return home Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. to host Seton Hill University in a PSAC West Division doubleheader with the men's team before playing three straight road meetings against Shippensburg University, Clarion University and Gannon University.
