Olivia McCabe collected a game-high of 23 points and seven rebounds, but Seton Hill University overcame an early deficit to build a double-digit second quarter lead in a 78-66 PSAC Western Division victory over the Lady Cats, Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center. Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 7-12 overall and 3-10 in conference-play.
Pitt-Johnstown took 13-7 lead seven minutes in on a pair of McCabe free-throws, but Seton Hill closed out the quarter on a 12-4 run and began to take control. Jenna Kaufman's 3-pointer with under a minute tie it at 17, before a jumper at the buzzer from Kinross Obiefule gave the Griffins a slim 19-17 lead.
Seton Hill maintained the momentum and outscored the Lady Cats, 22-13 in the second quarter to build an 11-point halftime advantage. A 3-pointer by Halie Torris, followed by Mariah Wells' lay-up midway through the quarter got the griffins' lead into double figures at 34-24. Wells then hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds left the increased it to 13, before
Laurel O'Barto's bucket as time expired cut the Pitt-Johnstown deficit to 41-30 at the break.
Victoria Moreland's 3-pointer to open the second half got the Lady Cats to within eight, but that was as close as it would get. A basket from Alexandria hay at the 5:40 mark of the third quarter matched Seton Hill's 13-point lead, and Torris' basket late in the quarter gave the Griffins an 11-point lead.
Seton Hill pushed its lead out to as many as 17 with 42 second left to play, before Pitt-Johnstown got a 3-pointer from
Alexis Hartwick, and a lay-up from
Gabrielle Smith the narrow it to 1a dozen.
Along with McCabe's 23 points and seven rebounds, the Lady Cats also got 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds from
Jamie Tabon and 10 points and three rebounds from Moreland. O'Barto finished with six points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, and Hartwick scored four points for Pitt-Johnstown.
The Lady Cats, who were outrebounded 44-32, shot just 39.1% (25-64) from the field and just 3-16 from behind the 3-point line. Pitt-Johnstown was a perfect 13-13 from the free-throw line. Seton Hill ended the afternoon shooting 46.1% (29-62) from the floor, 8-20 from 3-point range, and 12-18 from the charity stripe.
Wells had 16 points and five rebounds, and Kaufman chipped-in 15 points to lead four Seton Hill players who scored in double figures and help the Griffins to improve to 11-8 overall and 7-6 in the PSAC West.
The Lady Cats travel to PSAC games at Shippensburg on Wednesday, Clarion next Saturday, and Gannon on February 1. Pitt-Johnstown will return home to host a conference doubleheader with the Mountain Cats against Edinboro on February 4 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
