Vulcans Rally to Sweep Mountain Cats to Open PSAC-Play

4048California University (PA) scored five runs in the seventh inning of Friday's PSAC opener to down the Mountain Cats, 13-9, before completing the sweep with five more seventh-inning runs in a 12-9 victory in the nightcap.  Brett Hileman collected five hits, a home run and four RBI to lead Pitt-Johnstown, which slipped to 10-12 overall and 0-2 in the PSAC West.
 
In game one, Pitt-Johnstown rallied for five runs in the sixth to tie it sat eight, but California (PA0 came right back with five in the seventh to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 13-9.
 
California (PA) struck for a run in the top of first off of Mountain Cat starter Brady Walker, but Luke Williams' RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the inning plated Jack Shirk to tie it at one.
 
Austin Logan's two run single in a five-run third inning for the Vulcans made it 6-1, before Pitt-Johnstown cut the deficit in half on Hileman's RBI double and Evan Appleby's RBI triple in the bottom of the inning.
 
California (PA) got a two-run single from Kristian Webb in the sixth to push it out to 8-3.
 
Pitt-Johnstown answered right back with five runs in their half of the sixth to tie it again.  Dylan Kerstetter and Jack Shirk each drove in a run with base hits, and Hileman followed with a three-run homer over the left-centerfield wall.
 
However, the Vulcans scored five in the seventh, highlighted by David Marcus' two-run home run, to secure the win.
 
Hileman went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, and four RBI, while Dillon Boyer had four hits, including a triple and an RBI to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  Appleby and Kerstetter each had two hits and drove in a run.
 
Brad Coleman suffered the loss in relief of Walker after allowing three of the five runs in the California (PA) seventh inning.  Walker got the no-decision after giving up six runs on seven hits over the first five innings.
 
In game two, the Vulcans scored seven runs over the final two innings to erase a four-run deficit and secure the sweep with the 12-9 win.
 
The Mountain Cats spotted the Vulcans three first inning unearned runs, but got a lead-off home run from Dan Clark in a four-run second inning to take the lead.
 
California (PA) tied it in the third on a bases loaded passed-ball, and regained the lead on Garrett Brooks' sacrifice fly in the fourth, before Pitt-Johnstown scored two in its next at-bat to go up 6-5.
 
Pitt-Johnstown added three more in the fifth, but California (PA) got the Mountain Cat bullpen.  The Vulcans cut it to 9-7 in the sixth, then scored five more in the seventh, highlighted by Levi Krause's 3-run homer that broke a 9-9 tie.
 
Joe Gagliardi went 3-for-4, and Kerstetter singled, doubled and drove in a pair for Pitt-Johnstown.  Hileman also had two more hits.
 
Shane Supanick took the loss and dropped to 0-3 after surrendering the three-run homer in the seventh.  Brantley Rice Pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs (3 earned) on eight hits in the no-decision.
 
With the sweep, California (PA) improved to 6-8 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West.
 
Pitt-Johnstown concludes the four-game PSAC series against California (PA) in Washington, PA on Saturday, before traveling to Slippery Rock to open a four-game home-and-home conference series on March 31.
