Mountain Cats overpower Penn State New Kensington for first victory

Zuchelli, AndyAndy Zuchelli hit three 3-pointers and totaled 17 points to lead seven double-digit scorers as the Mountain Cats picked up their first win of the season with a 103-80 rout of Penn State New Kensington on Tuesday night in the Sports Center.

Behind an unrelenting offense that collectively shot 53.5% from the floor and drilled 10 3-pointers, Pitt-Johnstown improved to 1-2. Junior guard Ryan Smith tallied 12 points, six rebounds and six assists. Freshman Gavin Headings notched his first career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Nick Watts and Vinnie Cugini each added 12 points. Will Kromka chipped in 11 points and six rebounds, and Elijah Sechler provided 11 points and four assists.

The Mountain Cats racked up a 52-30 advantage in points in the paint. They were just as dominant on the run in the open floor, outscoring the Nittany Lions 27-9 in fast break points.

Penn State New Kensington went up 15-14 on a layup at the 14:23 mark of the first half. It was the last time Pitt-Johnstown trailed as a 24-12 flurry that was capped off with a three from Smith put the Mountain Cats up 38-27 with 6:45 remaining in the half.

They stretched that lead to as many as 16 on two different occasions before heading into the break with a 53-40 lead.

Pitt-Johnstown led 67-63 midway through the second half, but a 13-0 run made it 80-63, essentially sealing the game with a little more than seven minutes to play.

The Mountain Cats will be idle until after Thanksgiving break when they meet Frostburg State in the first contest of the IUP Thanksgiving Classic that is slated for Nov. 25 at 3 p.m.
