
Jay Rose shot 7-of-7 from the field in the first 20 minutes and scored all of his game-high 20 points in the first half to help Pitt-Johnstown climb out to a 21-point advantage on its way to a lopsided, 99-66, victory over Lock Haven in Friday's PSAC Crossover-opener in the Sports Center. The Mountain Cats evened their record at 3-3 and improved to 1-0 in conference-play.
Rose, who hit 4-5 from 3-point range and 2-2 from the line, also grabbed five rebounds to pace five Mountain Cats who scored in double figures and eight who tallied seven or more points.
Sean Dillon collected 15 points, a career-best seven rebounds, and a game-high six assists, while
Nick Watts had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds, and
Baden Forup and
Vinnie Cugini each had a dozen points. Pitt-Johnstown also got nine points from
Ryan Smith and seven points apiece from
Will Kromka and
Adam Bilinsky off the bench.
After Eli Washington's 3-pointer gave Lock Haven the lead to start, it was all Pitt-Johnstown. The Mountain Cats used a 41-17 run, capped by Rose's jumper, to climb out to a 41-20 lead with 5:22 left in the first half.
The Bald Eagles narrowed it to nine Gabe Springer's dunk at 1:52, but Rose answered with a 3-pointer, and Kromka's turnaround jumper in the paint gave the Mountain Cats a 48-36 lead at the half.
Dillon's bucket three minutes into the second half rebuilt it to 20, and the Mountain Cats never let Lock Haven get any closer than 16 the rest of the way.
Another basket from Kromka increased it to 90-59 with 3:52 to play, and Watts connected on a 3-pointer two minutes later to give Pitt-Johnstown its largest lead of the day at 35 to close out a half that saw the Mountain Cats shoot 61.3%.
The Mountain Cats dominated in just about every statistical category. Pitt-Johnstown, which held a lopsided 45-19 advantage in rebounding, shot 58.5% (38-65) from the field, including 10-14 from behind the arc and 13-14 from the free-throw line. Lock Haven was limited to just 38.2% (25-60) shooting from the field and just 9-26 from 3-point range.
Pitt-Johnstown also outscored the Bald Eagles, 44-30, in the paint and 22-4 in second-chance points.
Lock Haven, which slipped to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the PSAC, was led by Washington's 19 points.
Pitt-Johnstown will host PSAC Crossover-play doubleheader with the women's team against Mansfield Saturday afternoon in the Sports Center, before traveling to the Puerto Rico Classico to take on Puerto Rico Rio Piedras on Monday and Interamericana University on Tuesday.
