Jay Rose poured in a career-best 35 points to guide Pitt-Johnstown to a 97-90 overtime victory over Ana G. Méndez on Tuesday morning in Puerto Rico.
The freshman from Kentucky drilled three triples and shot 10-of-18 from the field and 12-of-15 from the free-throw line as the Mountain Cats collected their fourth straight win to improve to 6-3 (2-0 PSAC). Ryan Smith added 22 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Sean Dillon provided 10 points, five rebounds and a game-high five assists.
Rose accounted for six of the final eight points the Mountain Cats scored in regulation, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line over the remaining 3:40. The last two came with 32 seconds left and tied it at 80-all just before the Mountain Cats got a defensive stop to extend the game.
Ana G. Méndez posted six of the first eight points in the five-minute overtime period, but Pitt-Johnstown went swing-for-swing before taking control over the final 60 seconds. With the game knotted at 90-all and less than a minute remaining, Dillon's jumper with 47 seconds left put the Mountain Cats up by two and jump started a 7-0 run that decided the outcome.
Rose went 1-for-2 at the line, Smith connected on a pair of clutch free throws with 14 seconds left that made it 95-90 and Rose appropriately punctuated the game with a dunk in the waning seconds.
Pitt-Johnstown went up by as many as eight in the opening 10 minutes after Smith hit a 3-pointer that made it 23-15. But neither team pulled away over the next 10 minutes. Dillon made a jumper with 20 seconds left that gave the Mountain Cats a slim 37-35 lead heading into the break.
Each team racked up 38 points in the paint and had 14 points off turnovers. The Mountain Cats shot 46.9% (30-of-64) from the field and were 43.8% (7-of-16) from beyond the arc.
Pitt-Johnstown has more than a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday before visiting Shippensburg for a PSAC crossover game on Dec. 6 at 5 p.m.
