Battaglia Ties for 13th to Pace Golfers at Hannastown Intercollegiate Invitational

Battaglia, MarioPitt-Johnstown senior Mario Battaglia shot six-over-par to tie for 13th-place to pace the Mountain Cat men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at Monday's and Tuesday's West Liberty (WV) University Hannastown Intercollegiate Invitational in Greensburg.

In a field of nearly 100 golfers and 14 teams, IUP's Alex Swinnerton finished two under par, one stroke better than Wheeling's (WV)  Robin Duzman, to claim individual medalist honors and lead the Crimson Hawks to the team title at +15.

Battaglia, who was tied for the lead after Monday's golfing was suspended late in the round due to weather, opened the tournament with a 3-under first round, before shooting +5 and +4 over the final two rounds to tie for 13th.

Eli Ropietski, Justin Scally, and Lucas Smith all finished in a tie for 21st at +9, while Mauricio Hernandez finished tied for 33rd (+12) and Jake Morgan tied for 54th (+18) for Pitt-Johnstown.

The Crimson Hawks claimed the team championship by five strokes over second-place Davis & Elkins (WV).  West Liberty was third at +25, while the Mountain cats were fourth at +27, and California (PA) and Glenville State (WV) were tied for fifth at +30.

The Mountain Cats will host the Sunnehanna Collegiate at Sunnehanna Country Club on Monday and Tuesday, before traveling the the Gannon Bud Elwell Invitational at Whispering Woods Golf Club in Erie on Oct. 7-8.
