Mr. Chris Gilliam, the 2007-08 Daktronics East Region and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WVIAC) Player of the Year, Second-Team Daktronics Division II All-American and NABC/State Farm All-American, closed out his four-year career as one of the most accomplished athletes in Pitt-Johnstown men’s basketball history.
After playing in 25 games as a true freshman in 2004-05 and being named the Independent Basketball Freshman of the Year, Mr. Gilliam, a native of Baltimore, MD, established himself as of the top power forwards in the region as a sophomore. That season, he averaged 18.6 points per game and pulled down 6.3 rebounds per game on his way to garnering Independent Basketball Co-Player of the Year honors. His 68.6% (199-290) field goal percentage also led NCAA Division II and set the Mountain Cat single-season field goal percentage record.
In 2006-07, Pitt-Johnstown joined the WVIAC and Mr. Gilliam continued to excel. He earned Second-Team All-WVIAC accolades after averaging 17.0 points per game on 65.2% shooting and 6.2 rebounds per game.
However, it was his senior season in 2007-08 where he gained national attention as one of the best players in America. Mr. Gilliam averaged 19.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game and guided the Mountain Cats to a WVIAC regular season title, the program’s third berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, and a spot in the Regional Semifinals. His efforts also earned him WVIAC and East Region Player of the Year honors, Daktronics and NABC/State Farm All-America honors and an Honorable Mention All-America selection from Division II Bulletin.
That same year, Mr. Gilliam, who was chosen to play in both the NABC/NCAA Division II All-Star Game and the College Basketball Invitational All-Star Tournament, scored in double figures in all but two games and ranked 12th in the nation in field goal percentage (64.1%), 25th in scoring, and 47th in rebounding.
Mr. Gilliam ended his career as the program’s career leader in field goal percentage at 65.7% (688-1047), a record that still stands today. He also finished as Pitt-Johnstown’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,762 points and third all-time leading rebounder with 699 rebounds. Currently, Mr. Gilliam is fourth on the scoring list and tied for fifth on the rebounding list.
After graduating from Pitt-Johnstown in 2008 with a degree in Professional Writing, Mr. Gilliam continue his playing career professionally with stints in Denmark, Luxembourg, and Germany.
Mr. Gilliam then transitioned into the business world where he has worked in various financial and program management roles supporting the United States Department of Defense and United States Intelligence Community. Mr. Gilliam currently supports the United States Cyber Command for Keystone Innovative Solutions as a Business Technologist.
In 2017, he received his Masters in Business and Technology Management from Stevenson University and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
Mr. Gilliam, his wife Lindsey, a former college basketball coach at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and their two children Kennedy and Ella reside in Millersville, MD.
“After attending the inaugural Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame, it was always a dream of mine to be inducted along some of the best athletes, coaches, and administration at Pitt-Johnstown,” Mr. Gilliam said. “This honor is a testament to my Mom, friends, coaches, and teammates that helped me along the way to become the best student-athlete that I could be. This hall of fame induction is not only for me but for them as well.”
