Baseball Sweeps Bluefield State in Regular Season Finale

Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) each hit two-run homeruns to highlight a five-run fifth inning to lead the Mountain Cats to a 9-3 win in Saturday's WVIAC doubleheader opener at the Point Stadium. Pitt-Johnstown completed the sweep and wrapped-up the regular season with a 20-24 overall record and a 16-14 mark in the WVIAC Northern Division with a 4-3 victory in game two after scoring two runs in the sixth inning.
In the opener, Bluefield State scored an unearned run in the top of the first on Jay Shepherd's RBI groundout, but the Mountain Cats answered with two in the bottom of the frame on Drew Westover's (Flinton, Pa.) triple to right field that scored Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) and Zach Vignero (Johnstown, Pa.).
Two more runs in the third put the Big Blues back in front, 3-2. Nick Barbera's (Harrisburg, Pa.) run producing double off the left field screen in the bottom of the third scored Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) from second to knot it at three.
Pitt-Johnstown got a sacrifice fly from Roy that plated Morrow in the fourth to regain the lead, before adding five more in the fifth. Westover doubled home Vignero, and Morrow and Rubal each belted two-run homers to left center to set the final at 9-3.
Barbera, Vignero, Westover, and Campanella all had two hits apiece, while Morrow and Rubal each had two-run homeruns to lead Pitt-Johnstown.
Alex Naggy (Greensburg, Pa.) improved to to 3-2 after tossing the complete-game. Naggy gave up three runs and scattered six hits.
Cody Pruett suffered the loss for Bluefield State after surrendering nine runs on 10 hits in 4.2 innings. Pruett fell to 5-7.
In game two, Rubal's two-out single off the third base bag plated Morrow to put the Mountain Cats up 1-0 after two innings.
Pitt-Johnstown made it to 2-0 in the third on Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) RBI single.
The Big Blues cut it in half with a run in the fourth and took a 3-2 lead on Chris Norquay's two RBI single up the middle in the fifth.
However, the Mountain Cats scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the win. Morrow scored on a throwing error by Bluefield State shortstop Nateshon Thomas, and Barbera followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive home Campanella.
Bluefield State had a chance to tie it in the seventh, but Rico Garcia was thrown out at the plate to end the game after trying to score on a wild pitch.
Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) picked-up the win in relief of starter Derek Younker (Big Cove Tannery, Pa.) after pitching two scoreless innings. Moore improved to 2-4. Younker pitched the first five innings and surrendered three runs on 10 hits.
Barbera and Shaulis had two hits apiece for Pitt-Johnstown, whille Barbera, Martin, and Rubal all collected an RBI.
The Big Blues dropped to 9-29 overall and 7-18 in the WVIAC Southern Division.
The Mountain Cats travel to Beckley, W.Va. for the 2011 WVIAC Tournament this Thursday through Sunday.
