Mountain Cats Swept at West Liberty

Zane Madden belted a grand slam in an eight run fourth inning to lead West Liberty (WV) University to a 15-5 victory over the Mountain Cats to open Sunday's WVIAC doubleheader in West Liberty, W.Va. In game two, Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Zach Martin (Irwin, Pa.) each drove in two to help Pitt-Johnstown build a 6-1 lead, but the Hilltoppers used a five-run seventh inning to complete the sweep with an 8-6 win. The Mountain Cats fell to 10-13 overall anbd 6-5 in the WVIAC Northern Division.
In game one, Barbera scored on Martin's sacrifice fly in the first inning, before Barbera drove in Kyle Morrow (McVeytown, Pa.) with a single to right field in the second to give the Mountain Cats a 2-1 lead. West Liberty tied it in the bottom of the frame and took a 3-2 lead on Derek Dougherty's RBI single in the third.
In the top of the fourth, Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) singled-home Morrow to quickly help Pitt-Johnstown even things up. However, the Hilltoppers answered with eight runs, including a grand slam by Madden, off of Mountain Cat reliever Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.) in the bottom of the fourth to up 11-3 en route to the 15-5 win.
Morrow went 4-for-4 with three runs, while Barbera had two hits and two RBI. Josh Campanella (Allison Park, Pa.) and Roy each had two hits and an RBI for Pitt-Johnstown.
Derek Younker (Big Cover Tannery, Pa.) got the start for the Mountain Cats and took the loss and dropped to 0-2 after giving up three runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings. Tunink allowed eight runs (7 earned) and five hits in 2/3 of an inning.
In the nightcap, Scott Zubik (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led off the game with a single and eventually scored on a passed ball to give Pitt-Johnstown a 1-0 lead. The Hilltoppers tied it in the second after Mike Johnson doubled and scored on a Dillon Mangino single and a throwning error by the Mountain Cats.
Pitt-Johnstown regained the lead with RBI base hits by Barbera and Martin in the top of the third, before adding three more in the fifth to take a 6-1 lead.
The Hilltoppers stormed back with one in the fifth and five in the seventh, including two RBI doubles from Ryan Zelinski and Rudy Nagy, to go in front 7-6. West Liberty tacked on one more in the eighth to set the final at 8-6.
Barbera was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, and Martin had two RBI. Campanella also had two hits and an RBI.
Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) fell to 3-3 after giving up seven runs on 11 hits in 6.2 inning of work. Shaulis also fanned five. Jon Moore (Leechburg, Pa.) pitched 1.1 innings in relief and surrendered one run on one hit.
With the sweep, West Liberty improved to 7-20 overall and 4-6 in the WVIAC North.
The Mountain Cats host a non-conference doubleheader against Salem International (WV) University on Wednesday and a three-game WVIAC series against Seton Hill University on Saturday and Sunday. All games are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium.
