Baseball Drops Two to Seton Hill

04/09/2011

Seton Hill University used strong pitching and timely hitting to earn a 5-0 win over the Mountain Cats in Saturday's WVIAC Northern Division doubleheader opener, at the Point Stadium. In the nightcap, Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) connected on a three-run homer, but the Griffins scored 13 runs over the final two innings to break open a 7-7 game on their way to the sweep with a 20-7 victory. Pitt-Johnstown fell to 10-17 overall and 6-7 in the WVIAC North.
In game one, Seton Hill jumped out to an early lead with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning, before adding another one in the fourth on Josh Logan's RBI single to center.

The Griffins tacked on two more in the seventh on RBI doubles off the bats of Nate DeFilippi and Mike Leviseur to set the final at 5-0.
Nick Barbera (Harrisburg, Pa.) and Andy Rubal (Johnstown, Pa.) each had two hits for the Mountain Cats.
Drew Shaulis (Somerset, Pa.) fell to 3-4 after giving up five runs (3 earned) in 6.1 innings.
Rick Raraigh pitched 5.2 innings of shutout baseball to improve to 3-1 for Seton Hill. Jon Murphy tossed the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the year.
In game two, Seton Hill scored three in the first, but Zach Martin's (Irwin, Pa.) single to right plated Scott Zubik (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Barbera to make it 3-2.
After the Griffins made it 4-2 with a run in the top of the second, Barbera singled home Seth Roy (Bedford, Pa.) in the bottom of the fourth to cut it to 4-3.
A Logan RBI single made it 5-3 in the third, before Drew Westover (Flinton, Pa.) hammered a three-run homer over the left field screen to give Pitt-Johnstown its first lead of the day at 6-5.
Two-out RBI base hits by Dave McCarthy and Brendan Costantino in the fourth gave the lead back to Seton Hill. Martin tied it again with an RBI single up the middle in the fourth.
However, the Griffins answered in a big way. Seton Hill sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven runs on eight hits to take control, before adding six more, highlighted by Michael Cima's pinch-hit grand slam to put the game away.
Martin went-2-for-3 with three RBI, and Westover homered and drove in three for Pitt-Johnstown. Barbera collected two more hits and an RBI.
Paul Tunink (Indiana, Pa.) suffered the loss and fell to 0-2 after giving up three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings in relief of Mountain Cat starter John Fees (Carrolltown, Pa.). Fees pitched the first 3.2 innings and surrendered seveb runs on 11 hits.
With the sweep, Seton Hill improved to 20-5 overall and remained unbeaten in the WVIAC North at 15-0.

The Mountain Cats finish the WVIAC series against Seton Hill with a nine-inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Point Stadium, before traveling to the University of Charleston (WV) for a WVIAC doubleheader on April 13.
