Mountain Cats Split Doubleheader With Clarion

After allowing five unearned runs in a 9-0 loss to Clarion in Monday's PSAC doubleheader opener at Point Stadium, Jake Stern belted a grand slam and drove in six to help the Mountain Cats earn the split with an 11-6 win in the nightcap.  Pitt-Johnstown is now 9-14 overall and 4-4 in the PSAC Western Division.
 
In game one, Clarion scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, before Mike Lockhart's three-run homer in the third highlighted a four-run Golden Eagles' inning that make it 6-0.  Clarion then broke it open with three more unearned runs in the fifth to set the final at 9-0.
 
Kyle Morrow had two hits, including a double for the Mountain Cats, while Ernesto Rizzitano, Nate Negri, and Matt McGhee collected the other Pitt-Johnstown hits.
 
Nate Pope suffered the loss for the Mountain Cats and dropped to 0-4 after surrendering six runs (four earned) on five hits over the first three innings.  Rylan Schnably tossed the final three innings and gave up three unearned runs on six hits.
 
Tyler Delval pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout for Clarion to improve to 1-2.
 
In game two, Stern's first-inning grand slam gave Pitt-Johnstown an early 5-0 lead, before he added a two-run double in the third to extend it to 7-2.
 
The Golden Eagles answered with four runs in the fifth to cut it to 9-6, but the Mountain Cats added two insurance runs on RBI base hits from Negri and Rizzitano in the seventh inning in the 11-6 victory.
 
Stern went 2-for-4 with a grand slam, a double and six RBI, while Jake Warner added three hits, including a double for Pitt-Johnstown.  Negri collected two hits and drove in three, and Morrow and Rizzitano each had two hits and an RBI.  McGhee also had two of the Mountain Cats' 15 hits.
    
Dominic Kriner evened his record at 1-1 after giving up two runs on six hits in four innings.  Ryan Socol pitched the final two innings and didn't allow a run to record his fourth save of the season.
 
With the split, Clarion is now 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the PSAC West.
 
Pitt-Johnstown travels to PSAC doubleheaders at California University (PA) on Tuesday and Mercyhurst on Friday, before wrapping up the four-game conference series against the Lakers with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium.
