Box Score 2 Mercyhurst build early leads in both ends of Sunday's doubleheader in Erie on its way to a 9-0 and 7-1 PSAC West sweep over the Mountain Cats. Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 11-18 overall and 6-8 in conference-play.
In the opener, Mercyhurst jumped on Mountain Cat starter
John Fees for four runs in the first three innings, before adding five more in the sixth, including Hank Morrison's three-run homer off of reliever
Nate Plummer.
Jake Warner went 2-for-3, while
Ernesto Rizzitano,
Kyle Morrow, and
Dillon Boyer each collected a hit for Pitt-Johnstown.
Fees slipped to 3-5 after allowing four runs, but just two earned, on three hits in five innings of work. Plummer gave up five earned runs in on four hits in the sixth.
Joe Gnacinski tossed a complete-game shutout to improve to 3-0. Gnacinski held the Mountain Cats to five hits.
In game two, the Lakers scored three runs off of
Ryan Bills in the bottom of the first and never looked back in the 7-1 win.
Morrow and Warner each doubled, and Boyer drove in Pitt-Johnstown's lone run.
Bills surrendered four runs on eight hits in three innings to fall to 1-4.
Joe Pantano had three hits, including a homerun and two RBI, and Ryan Siegel added three hits and two RBI to pace Mercyhurst, now 18-8 overall and 10-4 in the PSAC West.
Pitt-Johnstown will host a non-conference doubleheader against Shippensburg on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Point Stadium, before hosting Indiana (PA) for a PSAC Western Division doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. at Point Stadium. Â
