Box Score Kutztown University did all of its scoring in the top of the first inning en route to eliminating the Mountain Cats with a 6-2 win in Friday's semifinals of the 2014 PSAC Baseball Championships at Butler's Kelly Automotive Park in Butler. Pitt-Johnstown's season came to an end with a 23-23 overall record.
Kutztown jumped on the Mountain Cat starter
John Fees early. The Golden Bears sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the first inning and scored six runs on seven hits. Among the seven base hits were four bunts, including a pair of successful suicide squeeze bunts.
After the first inning, Fees settled down and combined with
Ryan Socol to hold Kutztown scoreless the rest of the way.
Pitt-Johnstown answered with a run in the bottom of the frame after
Jake Warner singled and eventually scored from third on a two-out wild pitch.
The Mountain Cats cut it to 6-2 in the fourth on
Ernesto Rizzitano's base hit to left that chased home
Kyle Morrow from second.
Pitt-Johnstown tried to rally in the ninth. Rizzitano's infield single to start the inning chased Kutztown starter Pat Flynn. The Golden Bears brought in closer Matt Swarmer who got
Matt McMillen to fly out. Pinch-hitter
Mike Palkovitz then singled up the middle to put runners on first and second, but
Nate Pope struck out looking and
Nate Negri flied out to center to end the game.
Rizzitano collected two of the Mountain Cats' nine hits and drove in Pitt-Johnstown's lone run.
Dillon Boyer added a double for the Mountain Cats.
Fees suffered the loss and fell to 6-6 after allowing six runs on 11 hits over the first seven innings. Fees also walked one and struck out three. Socol held the Golden Bears scoreless on just one hits in two innings of work.
Flynn tossed the first eight-plus innings for Kutztown to improve to 2-4. Flynn gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out five. Swarmer got the final three outs to earn his ninth save of the season.
Thomas Romano went 3-for-4, while Brandon Martinez and John Dockins each had two hits for the Golden Bears. Brandon Cholish drove in two runs for Kutztown.
Kutztown advances to the PSAC championship game against Millersville University on Saturday at noon.
