Lady Cats' Season Ends With 72-69 Loss at Edinboro

2670Jasmine Harper scored 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds to help the Lady Cats erased a 15-point second half deficit, but Kelsey Sleighter's 3-pointer at the buzzer would not fall and Pitt-Johnstown's season came to an end with a 72-69 PSAC loss at Edinboro on Wednesday.  The Lady Cats struggled down the stretch, dropping 11 of their last 12 games, and finished with a 10-16 overall record and a 7-15 mark in conference-play.
 
Harper, Olivia McCabe, and Kayla DeCriscio combined for 21 of Pitt-Johnstown's 28 first half points to keep the Lady Cats close.
 
McCabe netted six early points, and DeCriscio followed with a 3-pointer at 11:09 to put Pitt-Johnstown in front 11-8, but Edinboro countered with an 11-2 run over the next 3:22 to build a six-point advantage of its own.
 
Maggie Moore's jumper a minute after DeCriscio's 3-pointer gave the lead back to the Fighting Scots, before a Lauren Hippo 3-pointer and a basket in the paint from Aignee' Freeland closed the run and put Edinboro in front, 19-13, at the 9:06 mark.
 
Pitt-Johnstown battled back behind five straight points from Harper to cut it to two, and Sleighter connected on 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with 1:43 remaining to get Pitt-Johnstown to within one at 29-28.
 
The Fighting Scots came right back on their next possession with a bucket from Valerie Majewski that give Edinboro a 31-28 lead at the half.
 
Edinboro used a 24-12 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half to open-up a 15-point lead.  McCabe's lay-up to open the half cut the Lady Cat deficit back to one, but Pitt-Johnstown wasn't able to get over the hump.  Three-pointers from Hippo and Majewski helped the Fighting Scots push the lead out to 43-34 at the first media timeout.
 
The Fighting Scots weren't done yet and extended to the lead 55-40 on Majewski's lay-up and a free-throw from Laurel Lindsay at 10:04.
 
Following a technical foul on Freeland at with 9:36 remaining, Pitt-Johnstown began hitting its 3-pointers and stormed back with a 25-10 spurt to knot it at 65.
 
Three-pointers from Leah Hansen and Nicole Carman, and Olivia Rizzo narrowed it to 61-57 with 5:49 to play, before another 3-pointer from Rizzo tied it at 3:55.
 
However, the Lady cats could not complete the comeback.  Edinboro answered right back with a 3-pointer by Majewski to regain the lead and the Fighting Scots were able to hold on after Sleighter's 3-pointer at the buzzer would not fall.
 
Harper had 19 points and eight rebounds, and McCabe added 10 points and six rebounds to lead Pitt-Johnstown.  The Lady Cats also got nine points from Hansen, eight points and six rebounds from Carman, and eight points from Rizzo.  Sleighter finished with seven points and six rebounds in the loss.
 
Carman ended her Lady Cat career ranked 17th on the Lady Cat All-Time Scoring List with 1,241 points and 13th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Rebounding List with 680, while Sleighter finished her career 27th on the scoring list with 1,117 points.  Sleighter also holds the school's record for career 3-pointers with 199.
 
Harper will return for her senior year ranked  20th on the all-time rebounding list with 591 rebounds, and just 25 points shy of becoming the Lady Cats' 36th 1,000-point scorer.
 
Neither team shot the ball all that well.  Pitt-Johnstown shot just 35.7% (25-70) from the field and 7-23 from behind the 3-point line.  The Lady Cats did make 12-13 from the free-throw line.  Edinboro ended the evening shooting 42.6% (29-68) from the floor, 5-12 from 3-point range, and 9-15 from the charity stripe.
 
Majewski and Freeland each scored 19m points and Nicole Johnson chipped-in 10mpoints and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Fighting Scots, who improved to 19-7 overall and 16-6 in the PSAC.
