Strong Second Half Leads Edinboro Over Lady Cats, 78-53

3883Edinboro University outscored the Lady Cats by 20 points in the second half to break open a five-point halftime lead on its way to handing Pitt-Johnstown its sixth straight loss with a 78-53 PSAC Western Division victory, Friday night in Edinboro.  Jamie Tabon had 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Lady Cats, who fell to 6-8 overall.
 
After a sluggish start by both teams, Emma Spinelli and Nicole Olkosky combined to hit three free-throws that gave Pitt-Johnstown a one-point lead, but Edinboro got baskets from JaVannah Jackson and Jontay Walton in the final 34 seconds of the first quarter to put the Fighting Scots up 13-12.
 
Three of Victoria Moreland's 13 first half points, followed by a basket in the paint from Tabon to start the second quarter gave the lead back to the Lady Cats, before Moreland's free-throw at 7:13 made it 21-15.
 
Edinboro answered with a 10-1 run of its own over the next three minutes to go back on top by three on consecutive 3-pointers by Katie Fischer and Walton and a lay-up from Ciara Rosten.
 
Pitt-Johnstown came right back to tie it at 29, but Maggie Moore's jumper as time expired gave Edinboro a 36-31 halftime advantage.
 
The Fighting Scots took control in the third quarter and extended the lead to 17.  Fischer's jumper pushed the lead into double figures just over two minutes into the quarter, and free-throws from Nicole Barnes and Fischer increased it to 57-41 entering the final quarter.
 
The Lady Cats narrowed the gap to 11 early in the fourth quarter on Moreland's 3-pointer and Laurel O'Barto's basket, but Edinboro closed it out with a 21-7 run over the final 8:20.
 
Along with Tabon, Moreland had 16 points, including 4-8 from 3-point range, and Olivia McCabe had six points and eight rebounds.  Spinelli added five points off of the bench, and O'Barto scored four points and dished out five assists.
 
Fischer's game-high 23 points, five rebounds, and six assists, and Walton's 14 points paced four Fighting Scots who scored in double figures.
 
Pitt-Johnstown shot 36.4% (16-44) from the field, 6-15 from 3-point range, and 15-24 from the free-throw line.  Edinboro, which outrebounded the Lady Cats, 47-32, held a 16-4 advantage in second chance points.  The fighting Scots ended the night shooting 40.0% (30-75) from the floor, 7-23 from behind the 3-point line, and 11-15 from the charity stripe.
 
The Fighting Scots made it 12 straight victories and improved to 12-2 overall and 8-0 in the PSAC West.
 
The Lady Cats return home to host PSAC Western Division doubleheaders with the Mountain Cats against Gannon on Monday and No. 8 California (PA) on Wednesday.  Both doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center.
