Mountain Cats Come Up Short in 96-88 PSAC Loss at Edinboro

6400John Paul Kromka scored 21 points and Romano Sebastiani added a career-high 19 points to help Pitt-Johnstown cut a second half deficit for four, but Edinboro used 15 3-pointers to hold off the Mountain Cats for a 96-88 PSAC victory, Wednesday night in Edinboro.  Pitt-Johnstown slipped to 13-9 overall and 8-7 in conference-play.
 
Edinboro jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Sebastiani and a Fred Mulbah jumper at 15:20 of the first half gave Pitt-Johnstown an 8-7 lead.
 
The lead see-sawed back-and-forth until the Fighting Scots got a Kurt Turner tip-in and a basket from Alex Jay at 6:50 to build a 33-25 lead.
 
6403Edinboro, which shot 55% from the floor in the first half, held the lead into the break.  Six straight points by the Mountain Cats, capped by Jared Jakubick's 3-pointer, cut it to 33-31 at 5:23, but the Fighting Scots were able to push it out to seven four minutes later, then to 46-38 at the half on Jaryn Simpson's jumper with :14 left.
 
Edinboro opened the second half on an 18-6 run to extend the lead to 64-44 on two straight buckets from Simpson.
 
The Mountain Cats answered with a 17-5 run of its own over the next seven minutes to pull to within eight at 69-91 on Marcin Wisomirski's layup and Kromka's free-throw.
 
6402Mulbah's free-throws at 9:05 made it 76-70, before another bucket from Simpson with under seven minutes left got Edinboro's lead back out to 11 at 83-72.
 
Pitt-Johnstown kept battling back.  Josh Wise's layup with 3:03 left made it a four-point game, but the Fighting Scots were able to hold on behind got four free-throws apiece from Simpson and DeAnthony Owens down the stretch to seal the win.
 
Kromka finished with 21 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, while Sebastiani hit five 3-pointers and tallied 19 points to lead the Mountain Cats.  Mulbah also had 19 points and seven assists, and Wiszomirski collected 12 points off the bench for Pitt-Johnstown.  Jakubick had seven points and Wise had six points and six rebounds.
 
With his six points against the Fighting Scots, Wise,  now has 1,010 career points, 13 shy of Josue Nieves for 29th-place on the Mountain Cat All-Time Scoring List.
 
6405Pitt-Johnstown shot 47.7% (31-65) from the floor, 7-22 from 3-point range, and 19-30 from the free-throw line.  Edinboro, which held a 47-27 advantage on the glass, shot 52.5% (32-61) from the field, including 15-29 from behind the arc.  The Fighting Scots were also 17-22 from the charity stripe.
 
Simpson's game-highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds and Turner's 17 points paced five Fighting Scots who scored in double figures.  Edinboro improved to 6-13 overall and 3-11 in the PSAC.
 
The Mountain Cats travel to a PSAC game at Clarion on Saturday, before hosting a conference doubleheader with the women's team against nationally-ranked Indiana (PA) on February 13.  The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. in the Sports Center, followed by the men's game at 7:30 p.m.
