Mountain Cats suffer non-conference setback to Indianapolis

Johnstown, PA

Smith, RyanCugini, VinniePitt-Johnstown had Indianapolis on its heels throughout the first half, but all of the momentum faded away when a furious second-half rally from the Greyhounds sent the Mountain Cats to a 92-67 non-conference setback on Friday night in the Sports Center.

The loss dropped the Mountain Cats to 2-6 (0-2 PSAC) on the season. The Greyhounds bumped up their record to 7-4 (3-0 GLVC).

In what was a fairly balanced scoring effort, Ryan Smith paced Pitt-Johnstown with a team-leading 12 points to pair with five rebounds. Freshmen Gavin Headings and Vinnie Cugini each recorded 11 points and five rebounds. Andrew Shull added 10 points and seven assists.

After falling behind 10-6 within the first five minutes, the Mountain Cats seized control with an extended 17-4 run to take a 23-14 lead on a layup from Cugini.

Roughly a minute later, they grabbed their largest lead at 26-16 on a trey from Shull. The Greyhounds responded by scoring the next 17 points to go up 33-26 with a little over five minutes left in the first half.

Zuchelli made a layup with just under a minute to play to cut the Mountain Cats' deficit to 39-37 at the break.

Indianapolis exploded out of the gates in the second half on a 16-2 rally to take a 55-39 advantage on a layup by Jesse Bingham. The Mountain Cats never quite recovered.

The Greyhounds made 46% of their field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes and restricted the Mountain Cats 35.7% (10-of-28) mark and just 2-for-13 from deep.

Bingham paced Indianapolis with 20 points and 10 rebounds and was one of three players along with David Ejah and Kendrick Tchoua to record a double-double.

Pitt-Johnstown hosts Bloomsburg on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the second game of a PSAC doubleheader with the women's team.
