Pitt-Johnstown could not overcome a slow-moving first half in what became a season-ending 69-52 setback to Seton Hill on Wednesday night in the Sports Center.
The Mountain Cats concluded their season at 6-22 overall and 4-18 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Griffins, who were already locked into the upcoming PSAC Tournament that opens next Monday, moved to 16-11 overall, 11-10 in the conference.
Freshman Gavin Headings shot 7-of-14 from the field and finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Nick Watts added 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Will Kromka contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
Watts opened the scoring for the Mountain Cats, but it would be short-lived as the Griffins answered with a game-defining 21-5 rally over the next 10 minutes to go up by 14 with 8:46 left in the first half.
A pair of free throws from Seton Hill's Kedrick Curtis in the waning seconds put Pitt-Johnstown in a 38-24 deficit at the break that proved to be insurmountable.
Pitt-Johnstown shot 31% (10-for-32) in the opening 20 minutes, while Seton Hill finished at 45.7% (16-for-35).
A quick 5-0 spurt midway through the second half that included three points from Kromka brought the Mountain Cats to within 48-39 with 8:28 remaining. Another layup by Watts again trimmed the deficit to nine a few minutes later, but the Griffins poured in 13 of the final 18 points to seal the game.
Seton Hill heavily benefitted from a 45-33 rebounding advantage and a 50-22 edge in points in the paint. Jimmy Moon led all scorers with 16 points.
Coach Bob Rukavina and his staff will bid farewell to three seniors in Andy Zuchelli, Grant Timmerson and Colin Cote.
