The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown will induct seven new members as part of the 15
th Athletics Hall of Fame class on Saturday, April 20 in the Pitt-Johnstown Wellness Center. The Class of 2024 includes:
Dr. Lindsay Baker '02 (Women's Basketball), Michael Black '78 (Men's Basketball), John Fasola '82 (Baseball), Chris Gilliam '08 (Men's Basketball),
Michelle Kropelak-Brownback '02 (Women's Track and Field),
Jared Kuleck '95 (Wrestling), and
Dave Yahner '92 (Wrestling).
The Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame was created in 2007 to honor prestigious groups of athletes, coaches, and university supporters and their champion spirits. These individuals merit distinction for their accomplishments and leadership in athletic endeavors for Pitt-Johnstown. Since its inception in 2007, 73 individuals and three teams have earned induction.
The reception is 5:45 p.m. in the Sports Center Hall of Fame Room and dinner is 7 p.m. in the Wellness Center.
Scheduled to speak at this year's event will be Pitt-Johnstown
President Dr. Jem Spectar and
Athletic Director and college wrestling's all-time winningest coach Pat Pecora.
Pitt-Johnstown
Assistant Athletic Director Abby Gearhart will serve as Emcee for this year's event.
2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame — Dr. Lindsay Baker
Women's Basketball – 1997-2002

An All-American on the basketball court and an Academic All-American in the classroom,
Dr. Lindsay Baker proved to be an all-around standout talent during her time at Pitt-Johnstown from 1997 through 2002.
After red-shirting due to an injury early on in her freshman season, Dr. Baker got back on the court in 1998-99 and began to make her mark on Head Coach Jodi Gault's nationally-renowned Lady Cat basketball program by becoming a four-year letter-winner and a two-year team captain.
As a red-shirt freshman, the Saxton, Pa. native helped guide Pitt-Johnstown to a 22-6 record, the top spot in the NCAA East Region Rankings, and a berth in the Division II National Tournament, before helping the team to its 18
th consecutive winning season a year later.
In 2000-01, Pitt-Johnstown reached the NCAA East Regional Tournament Semifinals with a 25-4 overall record, and Dr. Baker, the recipient of the 2000 Lowell Shaffer Student-Athlete Award, was the team's starting point guard and one of five Lady Cats who averaged nine points per game or better at 9.2 points per game.
With her career already off and running, Dr. Baker made her final season in 2001-02 one to remember by averaging 20.9 points per game and garnering Second-Team
Daktronics All-America honors, and being named an Honorable Mention All-American by both
Kodak and
Division II Bulletin. She led all of NCAA Division II in 3-point field goal percentage at 47.9% (68-142), and ranked eighth nationally in free-throw percentage (86.8%, 99-114), 12
th in scoring, and tied for 20
th in three-point field goals per game (2.5).
That same year, Dr. Baker, a Second-Team
Verizon Academic All-American, earned the Pitt-Johnstown Scholar-Athlete Award, and received an NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarship after graduating with a 3.83 overall GPA in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Geology.
Dr. Baker closed out her stellar career with 973 points. She still holds the Lady Cat single-season three-point field goal percentage record and her 89.2% free-throw percentage in 2000-01 ranks third on Pitt-Johnstown's all-time list.
Dr. Baker, who received her Doctorate in Kinesiology with a focus in Exercise Physiology from Penn State in 2008, moved to the Chicago area the previous year to work at the Gatorade Sports Science Institute (GSSI), a division of PepsiCo Research & Development, a company she has been with for the last 17 years.
She currently serves as the Director of the GSSI Clinical Research Headquarters in Valhalla NY, where they conduct sports hydration and nutrition studies with the mission of helping athletes optimize their health and performance. This research has led to a number of new commercial hydration products as well as technology innovations, including Gatorade's Gx Sweat Patch and Smart Bottle.
An active member and Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Dr. Baker serves on the Scientific Advisory Board for the Korey Stringer Institute (KSI), whose mission is to optimize athlete safety. She has authored over 60 scientific publications in sports hydration and nutrition, including peer-reviewed manuscripts, invited reviews, and book chapters. Dr. Baker was recently featured on the CBS Mornings Show–Football Fridays segment where she did an interview with host Nate Burleson and took him through a series of exercise tests at the GSSI lab in NY.
Dr. Baker, her husband Shannon Dolte, and their children Autumn, Elias, and Laurel reside in Carmel, NY.

"Playing for the Lady Cat Women's Basketball program was a dream come true; and more importantly the experiences gained, and lessons learned helped prepare me for life after basketball and shape me into the person I am today. For that I am forever grateful to the university, my coaches, and teammates."
2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame — Michael "Moon" Black
Men's Basketball – 1974-1978

Following a highly-decorated high school career, Mr. Michael "Moon" Black brought his basketball talents to Pitt-Johnstown and secured a spot on the 1977-78 All-Region team on his way to setting all of the Mountain Cat assists records.
Mr. Black caught the attention of coaches during his high school career at Philadelphia's Overbrook High School by earning 1973-74 All-Public, All-City, All-Scholastic accolades and being named to the East Coast All-American Team.
The two-time Sunny Hill League All-Star and League Sportsmanship Award his senior year, Mr. Black was a First Round draft pick in the Philadelphia Charles Baker Summer Pro League before he joined the Mountain Cat men's basketball team in 1974-75. Mr. Black played one season under Head Coach Dave Campbell and three seasons under Head Coach Jim Basista with fellow Pitt-Johnstown Hall of Famers Rich Ragan, Don Elzer, and Chuck Bradford.
Over his four-year career, Mr. Black helped lead the Mountain Cats to 59 victories and three winning seasons, including a 17-6 mark in his junior year in 1976-77.
Mr. Black, Pitt-Johnstown's Outstanding Athlete in March of 1978, proved to be one of the top point guards in the region by breaking the Mountain Cat record for assists in a game (18), assists in a season (221), assists in a career (423), and career assist average (4.7).
He still stands in seventh-place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Assist List, and is currently fifth on the All-Time Assist Average List.
In 1978, Mr. Black graduated from Pitt-Johnstown with a Bachelor's Degree in both Economics and Sociology, and an Associate Degree in Communication.
Throughout his professional career, Mr. Black worked in management for several Fortune 500 companies where he created, initiated, and implemented many successful programs. His efforts earned him the Wade Cable Operations Supervisor of the Year Award in 1995 and the MediaOne Cable Operations Manager of the Year Award in 1999.
Mr. Black has also given back to his community and spent 30 years volunteering for Haddington Multi Services for the Senior Citizen Agency, and eight years as Co-President & Founder of the "Enhancing Lives" Youth Program that teaches the basics of basketball and assists in the development in life skills and cultural exposures.
Off the basketball court, Mr. Black was a talented percussionist musician in both the Overbrook High School orchestra and band. He was selected as one of the best percussionist in the City and became a member of the All-Philadelphia High School Orchestra and All-Philadelphia High School Band where he performed in high schools and other venues along the East Coast.
In addition, Mr. Black is the Editor and Co-Author of a recently published book, "MACnificently Made," a book authored by Maria A. Cephas and women co-authors "Unveiling The Power of Paternal Reunion."
Mr. Black, who continues to reside in Philadelphia, has two grown children, Jocelyn Black Paul and Joy Fulton, and three grandchildren, Mahasin, Samayyah and Asmaa.
"This honor means everything to me," Mr. Black said. "This is the ultimate acknowledgment for my many days and nights at 1 a.m. in the dark, by myself, practicing and developing my skills. I am the fourth of five children (Ronald, Robert, Clarissa Wells, me and Steven) to my wonderful parents Robert and Geneva Black. I've always had the love and support of my immediate family, along with a host of other family members and close friends who are like family."

2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame — John Fasola
Baseball – 1978-1982
It is said that records were meant to be broken, and that is what Altoona, Pa native Mr. John Fasola accomplished in his four-year Pitt-Johnstown baseball career. When his collegiate playing days ended in 1982, Mr. Fasola, a two-time NCAA All-South Atlantic Region selection, held nearly every single season Mountain Cat offensive record and had offers to play professionally in both the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds organizations.
The 1978 Altoona Area High School Most Valuable Player joined Pitt-Johnstown Hall of Famer Ken Keiper's Pitt-Johnstown team and began to rewrite the Mountain Cat record books as a catcher, designated hitter, and first baseman.
In 1980, Mr. Fasola was named Second-Team All-South Atlantic Region after finishing 10
th nationally in batting average in NCAA Division II at .425 and fifth in the nation in triples with five.
The following year, his five triples ranked fifth nationally for the second straight season helping him to garner Honorable Mention All-South Atlantic Region honors.
Despite an injury that hampered his senior season in 1982, Mr. Fasola concluded his stellar career atop the Mountain Cat single-season record lists for games-played (32), at-bats (105), batting average (.425), runs (25), hits (40), home runs (9), RBI (34), doubles (7), and triples (5).
He also held the Pitt-Johnstown career records for triples (13), home runs (18) and RBI (90).
After earning Most Valuable Player honors in the 1979 George B. Kelly Federation AAABA League, Mr. Fasola spent the next two summers playing for the Waynesboro Generals in the Virginia Valley League, one of just three Major League Baseball-sponsored collegiate summer leagues, where he finished second in the league with seven home runs in 1980.
Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration in 1982, Mr. Fasola had offers to play professionally with the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. He signed with the Pirates as a free-agent and played one year in Bradenton, Fla. in the Gulf Coast Rookie League.
For the last 37 years, Mr. Fasola has been an insurance professional in the Cleveland Area and is currently an Executive Vice President for the Oswald Companies.
He is active in supporting several charities, including being a board member of both the Boys and Girls Club of North Eastern Ohio and the City Mission of Cleveland.
A member of the St. Mary Catholic Church and a graduate of Leadership Cleveland Class of 2020, Mr. Fasola, and his wife of 40 years Teri reside in Hudson, Ohio. The couple has three adult children, Jessica, Johnny, and Jayme.

I would like to thank the Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame committee for including me in this class, my Coach while I played at Pitt-Johnstown and a fellow Hall of Fame member Coach Ken Keiper, all of my teammates during my four years here, and last but certainly not least my friends and family who supported me all along my baseball journey that culminates with this humbling achievement."
2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame — Chris Gilliam
Men's Basketball – 2004-2008
Mr. Chris Gilliam, the 2007-08
Daktronics East Region and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WVIAC) Player of the Year, Second-Team
Daktronics Division II All-American and NABC/
State Farm All-American, closed out his four-year career as one of the most accomplished athletes in Pitt-Johnstown men's basketball history.
After playing in 25 games as a true freshman in 2004-05 and being named the Independent Basketball Freshman of the Year, Mr. Gilliam, a native of Baltimore, MD, established himself as of the top power forwards in the region as a sophomore. That season, he averaged 18.6 points per game and pulled down 6.3 rebounds per game on his way to garnering Independent Basketball Co-Player of the Year honors. His 68.6% (199-290) field goal percentage also led NCAA Division II and set the Mountain Cat single-season field goal percentage record.
In 2006-07, Pitt-Johnstown joined the WVIAC and Mr. Gilliam continued to excel. He earned Second-Team All-WVIAC accolades after averaging 17.0 points per game on 65.2% shooting and 6.2 rebounds per game.
However, it was his senior season in 2007-08 where he gained national attention as one of the best players in America. Mr. Gilliam averaged 19.6 points and 8.6 rebounds per game and guided the Mountain Cats to a WVIAC regular season title, the program's third berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament, and a spot in the Regional Semifinals. His efforts also earned him WVIAC and East Region Player of the Year honors,
Daktronics and NABC/
State Farm All-America honors and an Honorable Mention All-America selection from
Division II Bulletin.
That same year, Mr. Gilliam, who was chosen to play in both the NABC/NCAA Division II All-Star Game and the College Basketball Invitational All-Star Tournament, scored in double figures in all but two games and ranked 12
th in the nation in field goal percentage (64.1%), 25
th in scoring, and 47
th in rebounding.
Mr. Gilliam ended his career as the program's career leader in field goal percentage at 65.7% (688-1047), a record that still stands today. He also finished as Pitt-Johnstown's second all-time leading scorer with 1,762 points and third all-time leading rebounder with 699 rebounds. Currently, Mr. Gilliam is fourth on the scoring list and tied for fifth on the rebounding list.
After graduating from Pitt-Johnstown in 2008 with a degree in Professional Writing, Mr. Gilliam continue his playing career professionally with stints in Denmark, Luxembourg, and Germany.
Mr. Gilliam then transitioned into the business world where he has worked in various financial and program management roles supporting the United States Department of Defense and United States Intelligence Community. Mr. Gilliam currently supports the United States Cyber Command for Keystone Innovative Solutions as a Business Technologist.
In 2017, he received his Master's in Business and Technology Management from Stevenson University and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
Mr. Gilliam, his wife Lindsey, a former college basketball coach at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and their two children Kennedy and Ella reside in Millersville, MD.
"After attending the inaugural Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame, it was always a dream of mine to be inducted along some of the best athletes, coaches, and administration at Pitt-Johnstown," Mr. Gilliam said.
"This honor is a testament to my Mom, friends, coaches, and teammates that helped me along the way to become the best student-athlete that I could be. This hall of fame induction is not only for me but for them as well."
2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame— Michelle Kropelak-Brownback
Women's Track and Field – 1998-2002

Over her four-year career as a student-athlete at Pitt-Johnstown,
Ms. Michelle Kropelak-Brownback proved to be one of the most talented and versatile women's track and field athletes in program history on her way to setting several Mountain Cat records that still stand today.
After earning six District (7) WPIAL championships, and four PIAA State-Place finishes as a member of the Springdale High School track and field team, Ms. Kropelak-Browback joined Pitt-Johnstown Hall of Fame Coach Clyde Horner's squad in 1998-99 and made an immediate impact on the program.
Throughout her career, Ms. Kropelak-Brownback, a native of Springdale Pa., competed in up to seven events in a single track and field meet. She accumulated 313 ¾ career points to surpass the previous Pitt-Johnstown record holder by nearly 100 points.
Ms. Kropelak-Brownback also broke the Mountain Cat record for points in a season with 124 ¾ in 1999, points in an outdoor meet with 47.0 at Juniata College on April 6, 2002, and points in an indoor meet with 43.0 at Albright College on March 20, 1999
In addition, Ms. Kropelak-Brownback set Pitt-Johnstown's top mark in the Long Jump (17.6m), posted the second-best time in the 100-Meter Dash (12.7) and 100-Meter Hurdles (15.7), and fourth-best time in the 200-Meter Dash (27.2).
When her career came to an end, she collected 50 first place finishes and set stadium records in the 100 and 200-Meter Dashes, 100-Meter Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump and two relays.
In her final home meet in 2002, Ms. Kropelak-Brownback won first place honors in the 100 and 200-Meter Dashes, 100-Meter Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump and ran legs of the winning 400 and 1,600-Meter Relays that broke school records.
Ms. Kropelak-Brownback, also a four-year member of the Pitt-Johnstown women's soccer club team, served as President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and spent her 2021 Spring Break with fellow Pitt-Johnstown students building houses for impoverished villagers in Jamaica.
She earned a NCAA Degree Completion Scholarship and graduated from Pitt-Johnstown in 2002 with a 3.4 overall GPA in Elementary Education. In 2009, Ms. Kropelak-Brownback received her Master's Degree in Instructional Technology from Wilkes University.
Ms. Kropelak-Brownback began her professional career teaching sixth grade in the Whitehall Coplay School District and coaching junior high soccer for the Moravian Academy boys' and girls' teams. She and her husband would also serve as Christian sport camp counselors during the summer. As her family grew, she began to coach her children and invest in her surrounding community.
Currently, she is a sixth-grade math teacher in the Wilson School District and continues to be active in sports as a youth soccer and Junior High track and field coach. She is very active in the community and serves in various leadership roles.
Ms. Kropelak-Brownback, her husband and former three-time Pitt-Johnstown All-American Wrestler Ethan Brownback, and their three children, EJ, Luke, and Lillian, all standout athletes in various sports, reside in Reading, Pa.
"I am incredibly humbled and honored to join the extremely talented group of women that have paved the way at Pitt-Johnstown," Ms. Kropelak-Brownback said.
"Their strength and commitment passed on a tradition of excellence that challenged me and fueled a passion to succeed. I never would have anticipated joining them in the Athletic Hall of Fame. Pitt-Johnstown will always have a special place in my heart. I am proud to be a Lady Cat!"
2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame — Jared Kuleck
Wrestling – 1991-1995

Ridgway, Pa. native
Mr. Jared Kuleck etched his name into the storied history of Pitt-Johnstown wrestling by becoming a four-time NCAA Division II National Qualifier and a three-time NCAA All-American in his four seasons as a Mountain Cat.
After winning a PIAA AA State Championship at Ridgway Area High School in 1991, Mr. Kuleck joined Head Coach
Pat Pecora's nationally dominant Pitt-Johnstown wrestling program and earned his first trip to the National Tournament as a freshman in helping the Mountain Cats secure an NCAA East Region Championship and a seventh-place finish at the National Tournament in 1992.
As a sophomore in 1992-93, Mr. Kuleck began to show off his dominance in the 190-lb. weight class by winning an East Region Championship and earning his first NCAA All-America honor with an eighth-place finish. That season, the Mountain Cats placed ninth nationally with a then-school-record of five National All-Americans.
In 1993-94, Mr. Kuleck earned his third trip to the National Tournament and finished sixth in the country as the Mountain Cats secured another East Region title and another Top-10 finish.
In his final season in 1994-95, Mr. Kuleck guided Pitt-Johnstown to a perfect, 18-0, dual meet record, a fourth straight
regional crown, and a fourth-place national finish, the highest in program history to that point. In the process, he claimed his final
individual East Regional Championship and placed fifth at the National Tournament to become an All-American for a third time.
Mr. Kuleck closed out his stellar Pitt-Johnstown career with a 98-29-2 overall record with 48 total wins by fall. His 21 regular season victories at 190 lbs. stood atop of the Mountain Cat record books from 1993-1999, while his 32 wins in a season was a program record from 1995-2008. In addition, Mr. Kuleck's 14 falls at 190 lbs. during the 1992-93 season was the best in program history until 2014.
Mr. Kuleck still stands in 26
th-place on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Winning Percentage List at .759, and his 98 career victories is 30
th on the Mountain Cat All-Time Wins List.
Mr. Kuleck, who served as an assistant coach under Coach Pecora in 1995-96 while finishing his degree, graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education.
In the Fall 1996, he was hired by the Ridgway Area School District, where he has been a fourth and fifth grade teacher.
Mr. Kuleck, who is now in his 28
th year as a Pennsylvania educator, earned his Master's of Instruction Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University in August 1999 only to then secure a Pennsylvania Principal's Certification in 2001 from Edinboro State University.
He has served on many committees and has been a volunteer on various school and extra-curricular activities including being a member of the Ridgway Area Teachers' Association and the Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA).
An avid outdoorsman, he is an NRA-Certified Rifle Instructor, also coaches Ridgway's trap team, and serves as a Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter Education Instructor.
Mr. Kuleck, his significant other Crystal Conner, and his three daughters Addison age 15, Zoe age 13, and Sophia age 11 continue to reside in Ridgway.
"When Coach Pecora called and told me that I would be inducted into the Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame my reply was, 'I am speechless!' And today, I am still speechless," Mr. Kuleck
said. "The idea of my induction has made me feel both humbled and honored. I am ecstatic to know that I have been considered one of Pitt-Johnstown's elite athletes. Furthermore, I was shown an enormous amount of effort and love on the part of my coaches, family and friends throughout my wrestling career. As I've grown older, I have come to realize just how much their support and devotion to me and this sport has helped me grow as a wrestler, but more importantly as a man. I will always cherish the memories that we made together at Pitt-Johnstown and through wrestling. I am certainly proud to say that Coach Pecora and Pitt-Johnstown have had a tremendous impact on my life and that fire will burn inside of me forever."
2024 Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Fame — Dave Yahner
Wrestling – 1987-1992

Patton, Pa. native
Mr. Dave Yahner closed out his outstanding Pitt-Johnstown wrestling career as one of the most highly decorated Mountain Cats in history. Mr. Yahner, Pitt-Johnstown's first
GTE Academic All-American, excelled on the wrestling mat as a three-time NCAA All-American and in the classroom as a three-time National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Academic Team selection.
Mr. Yahner caught the eye of Mountain Cat wrestling coach
Pat Pecora in 1986 when he posted a 33-0 record and became Cambria Heights High School's first PIAA State Wrestling Champion.
Less than two years later, Mr. Yahner followed in his brother and Pitt-Johnstown Athletics Hall of Famer Rob's footsteps and joined Coach Pecora's Mountain Cat wrestling squad.
As a sophomore in 1988-89, Mr. Yahner began to make his mark on the program by placing fourth at the 1988 Midlands Wrestling Open at Northwestern University in Illinois. He helped guide the Mountain Cats to a 10-3 dual meet record, a NCAA Southwest Regional Championship, and a fifth-place national finish, where he became an All-American by placing fourth at 167 lbs. That same year, Mr. Yahner, along with hall of famer Carlton Haselrig, became the final two Mountain Cats to earn berths in the NCAA Division I National Championships. He was also named to the NWCA All-Academic Team for the first of three times.
The following season, the Mountain Cats posted an 11-3 dual meet record, won another NCAA Regional Tournament, and Mr. Yahner, now a two-time NWCA All-Academic Team member, placed eighth at the NCAA Division II National Championships to help Pitt-Johnstown secure another top-25 finish.
After the team battled through a tough 1990-91 season, Mr. Yahner, now a senior, and the Mountain Cats had something to prove. Pitt-Johnstown bounced back to go 15-5 in dual meets, win an East Region crown, and place seventh at the National Tournament. His third-place finish at the 1992 National Championships earned him his third All-America honor. In the process, Mr. Yahner was also named to the NWCA All-Academic Team and a
GTE Academic All-American.
Mr. Yahner's 113-23-1 career ranks 12
th on the Pitt-Johnstown All-Time Wins List, and his .828 winning percentage is 13
th on the Mountain Cat list.
After earning his Bachelor of Science Degree from Pitt-Johnstown in 1992, Mr. Yahner served as a part-time assistant coach under Coach Pecora from 1992-1996.
In May of 1992, Mr. Yahner began working as a Civil Engineer for The EADS Group, Inc. (EADS), a multi-disciplined Engineering and Architecture Design Firm with over 200 employees with nine offices in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and West Virginia. He started his career as an engineering designer and soon became a Project Manager on large municipal infrastructure projects. From 2007 to 2015, Mr. Yahner managed the EADS headquarters office in Altoona. Currently, his primary duty is management of the EADS Somerset Office and is Principal-in-Charge of EADS offices in Somerset, North Huntingdon and Beaver, Pa. and Morgantown, W.Va. As a Principal Owner of EADS, he is a Vice President and member of both the EADS Group and EADS Architects Boards of Directors.
Mr. Yahner, a Registered Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, New Jersey and Virginia, and his wife Rhonda, reside in Somerset. The couple has three children, sons Isaac and Matthew, and daughter Jessie.
"Wrestling under the guidance of Coach Pat Pecora with my brother Rob as assistant coach was a great experience. They influenced me a lot," Mr. Yahner said.
"I thank God for my parents and family who always supported me. I'm grateful for the opportunities I had at Pitt-Johnstown and for all my coaches, teammates and friends throughout my entire wrestling career. I am honored, but at the same time, deeply humbled to be inducted into the Hall of Fame."
