Mountain Cats fall to No. 5/4 Gannon on the road

Headings, GavinWatts, NickPitt-Johnstown held serve initially, but could not hold back the high-powered attack of No. 5 Gannon over the final 20 minutes in what led to a 117-91 loss at Cathedral Preparatory High School on Sunday afternoon.

The Mountain Cats slipped to 6-21, 4-17 in the PSAC. The Golden Knights, who came in already having secured the top spot in the PSAC Western Division, improved to 25-2 overall and 19-2 in the conference.

Freshman Gavin Headings compiled a team-best 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting to go with five rebounds and four assists. Will Kromka and Nick Watts each contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. The pair also combined for eight assists and two blocked shots.

Vinnie Cugini added 13 points, and Elijah Sechler supplied 10 to round out five players in double-figures for the Mountain Cats, who shot an efficient 58.3% (35-for-60) from the field and a 37.5% (6-for-16) mark from beyond the arc.

Kromka's first 3-pointer of the game gave Pitt-Johnstown a 3-2 lead, but Gannon scored the next 11 points to take a 13-3 lead. Despite falling behind by as many as 19 with five minutes to go in the half, the Mountain Cats went on a 15-6 run that was polished off with a 3-pointer from Andy Zuchelli to cut the deficit to 54-44 at the break.

They scratched to within five less than two minutes into the second half thanks to two free throws from Watts. However, the Golden Knights responded with a quick 9-0 run that pushed the lead back up to 14.

Pitt-Johnstown clawed to within seven on Kromka's layup with 13:32 remaining. Gannon answered with five straight points to take a double-digit lead for good before putting the game out of reach down the stretch.

Lyle Tipton secured a double-double with a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Knights.

The Mountain Cats will wrap up their season at home against Seton Hill on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off from the Sports Center.
